7 diy skin care remedies for soft and gorgeous skin
These DIY skin care remedies will improve your natural glow. Getting smooth, soft, and clear skin is something most of us strive for. Not only does it make us more confident, but it is also a sign of good health. The problem with typical store-bought skin care products is that they are full of chemicals, carcinogens, artificial ingredients, and preservatives that we do not want to be putting on the largest organ of our body (the skin). That’s why these home made, cheap, easy, DIY skin care remedies are great options. They are made from ingredients that are pronounceable and can be found (mostly) in your kitchen!
1. COCONUT OIL BODY BUTTER
Body butter is one of the best DIY skin care remedies, as it is creamy and soothing to your skin. This coconut oil-based one will make your skin absolutely glowing. Coconut oil contains healthy fats that are great for your skin. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help with puffiness. This moisturizing cream has only 2 ingredients and is appropriate for anywhere on the body. The addition of lime makes this smell amazing, and adds some vitamin C and antioxidants that are great for clearing the skin.
Ingredients:
½ cup Coconut oil
15 drops of lime oil (or your favourite essential oil; you can try fresh lime juice too)
Directions:
Whisk the solid coconut oil in your mix-master, Kitchen Aid, electric whisk or stick blender. When it starts to soften add the lime or essential oil drops and keep mixing until nicely whipped. Label it and take note of the best by date on the coconut oil bottle. It’s best not to apply things with citrus oils to the skin before going out into the sun, as they can make the skin more photo-sensitive or more prone to going red. Store the oil in a cool, dark cupboard and most importantly – enjoy!

GRAPEFRUIT AND BROWN SUGAR FACIAL SCRUB
When you slough away dead skin cells with a facial scrub, you are left with soft and glowing skin. Using sugar to make homemade facial scrubs creates a great texture to get those dead skin cells off. Grapefruit is high in vitamin C to clear and brighten your skin. However, you should use this only once per week because of how acidic grapefruit is. Also, you can test it on your arm first because it is less sensitive, before applying to face to see if your skin will adversely react to the acid.
Ingredients:
½ pink grapefruit, peeled
1 cup brown sugar
water or grapefruit juice, as needed
Directions:
Toss the grapefruit and sugar into your blender or food processor, and blend until smooth. If you're having trouble getting things moving in the blender, add the water or grapefruit juice - 1 tablespoon at a time - until things are blending up nicely. To apply, wash your face as usual, then gently massage 1-2 tablespoons of the scrub into your still-damp skin. If you like, you can let it sit on your face for a few minutes before gently wiping the scrub away with a warm, damp wash cloth. Follow up with a good facial moisturizer.
HYDRATING CHOCOLATE FACIAL MASK
This facial mask will look good enough to eat! However, it contains nourishing avocados that will make your skin glow because of the healthy oils. The almonds also contain healthy fats that moisturize and smooth your skin. The raw cacao contains more antioxidants than regular cocoa powder, giving your skin more nutrients to be gorgeous. This recipe makes several masks, so you could save them for later, or have a mini spa day with your friends or family.
Ingredients:
(makes 2-3 applications)
1/2 ripe avocado
1 handful almonds (10-12 nuts)
1/4 cup water
1 tbsp raw cacao powder
Directions:
Add all ingredients into a high speed blender and blend for 30 seconds or until the consistency is even. The mixture should be thick, but you can add more water if it is not blending. When done, massage your mask over a clean face, light some candles, put on some relaxing music and leave on for 15 minutes. Rinse off when finished and apply anti-aging serum or your facial oil of choice.
PINEAPPLE HONEY ALMOND EXFOLIATING FACIAL SCRUB
The almond oil in this facial scrub is moisturizing, nourishing, and softening. Honey is good for eczema, is anti-inflammatory, treats acne, is antibacterial, and eliminates wrinkles. Pineapple contains the enzyme bromelain, which is the exfoliating ingredient in the scrub. Fruit acids from pineapple improve circulation and remove dead skin cells as well. You will be getting a lot of benefits from this exfoliating scrub, and your skin will be left smooth.
Ingredients:
1 small pineapple
2 tsp sweet almond oil
1 tsp honey
Directions:
Prepare pineapple, Start by cutting of the top and bottom of the fruit. Cut off the skin and “eyes” leaving only the yellow fruit. Chop it up and pop in the blender on low until you have the consistency of liquid paste. Add in the almond oil followed by honey and blend for 10 seconds. Check consistency - it should not be too runny or too thick. Adjust quantities to get the right consistency. To apply, wet hands under the tap and lightly go over face to slightly dampen the skin. Take 1-2 teaspoons of scrub into your palms, and starting at the base of the neck, begin massaging it in using small circular movements. Apply to the entire face taking care to avoid the delicate eye area. Do this for 5 minutes before rinsing off in tepid water. Finish with a cold water rinse and pat the skin dry. Apply your regular moisturizer or why not choose one to easily make at home. This recipe is one to keep maximum 2 days in a tightly covered container in the fridge but best to make up fresh when needed. Do not use this more than twice a week.
ALOE AND CALENDULA CLEANSING CREAM
Cleansing creams feel so soothing and cool on the skin. This cleansing cream is said to remove make-up and dirt, too. It is very moisturizing and hydrating from the healthy oils. The aloe vera in this recipe has anti-inflammatory properties that can cool your skin if it is sunburnt as well. There are a few ingredients you probably do not have or don’t know where to find (I’m looking at you anhydrous lanolin) and that’s okay! All you have to do is substitute it with a similar ingredient, or try omitting it and see how it goes. Considering this is going to be a creamy mixture, it will be pretty versatile.
Ingredients:
1/4 cup almond, sunflower or soybean oil
2 tablespoons coconut oil (extra-virgin, unrefined)
2 tablespoons beeswax
1 teaspoon anhydrous lanolin
1/4 cup pure aloe vera juice
3 tablespoons strong calendula blossom or chamomile flower tea (you can substitute distilled water or your favorite hydrosol)
1 tablespoon vegetable glycerin
1 large (2 small) vitamin E oil capsules
15 drops lavender essential oil
15 drops rosemary or geranium essential oil
8 drops calendula essential oil, optional
Directions:
In a small saucepan over low heat or in a double boiler, warm the base oils, beeswax and lanolin until the wax is just melted. In another pan, lightly warm the aloe vera juice, tea and vegetable glycerin. Remove both pans from heat and pour the oils, wax and lanolin mixture into the blender, and allow it to cool until it just begins to thicken and becomes slightly opaque. It will take approximately 5 to 10 minutes to set like a soft, loose salve, depending on the temperature of your kitchen. As it thickens, give the mixture a few stirs to remove any lumps and incorporate any of the mixture that sticks to the sides of the blender. Do not allow this mixture to get too thick or you may have a difficult time getting it out of your blender. Place the lid on the blender and remove the lid’s plastic piece. Turn the blender on high and slowly drizzle the watery juice, tea and glycerin mixture through the center of the lid into the vortex of swirling fats below. Almost immediately the cream will turn pale yellow and begin to thicken. Blend for about 10 to 15 seconds until all the watery mixture has been added, then check the consistency of the cream. It should have a smooth texture. If the water mixture is not properly combining with the oils, wax and lanolin mixture, turn off the blender and give the cream a few manual stirs with a spatula to free up the blender blades. Then, replace the lid and blend on medium for another 5 to 10 seconds. Repeat this process until cream is smooth. Pierce the vitamin E capsule and squeeze the contents into the cream, add the essential oils, then blend completely another 5 seconds until the cream is smooth and thick. Note: If the temperature of your kitchen is above 76 degrees, the cream will maintain a softer consistency. (Coconut oil turns from solid to liquid at 76 degrees). If your kitchen is below 76 degrees, the cream will be firmer. Pour the finished cream into a storage container. Lightly cover each container with a paper towel and allow the cream to cool for about 30 minutes before capping. If, after a few hours or days, water begins to separate from your cream, don’t worry. You can pour off the watery liquid and use the resulting product as a foot, elbow or knee balm. The mixture can separate if the fat temperature and water temperature are not relatively equal and cool enough when the two portions are blended. Using a soft cloth, cleansing pad or your fingers, apply approximately 1/2 to 1 teaspoon to cover entire face, throat, and décolleté. Makes 1 cup.
STRAWBERRY PEPPERMINT FOOT SCRUB
An often neglected part of your skin is your feet. They need moisturizing and care too though (although, that could just be me because I’m a runner)! If you’ve ever came home from work and wanted to just put your feet up and relax, this recipe is for you! You probably have most of these ingredients at home, and they are all great for your skin. Strawberries contain antioxidants that can help soften your feet, and the oils are very hydrating. The sugar will help create texture to exfoliate dead skin (like those pesky calluses on your feet). Also, the peppermint oil is antibacterial for your feet and makes your feet feel soothed.
Ingredients:
2 cups pureed strawberries
1 tablespoon of olive oil
1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
2 tablespoons of granulated white sugar
4 drops peppermint essential oil
Directions:
Simply blend all the ingredients well and then transfer into a pretty glass jar. To use the scrub, simply rub the scrub into your feet gently in a circular motion, rinse with warm water, and enjoy the results! It is great to use strawberries in this recipe because they are rich in salicylic acid, which helps dead skin shed more easily. The sugar granules also help to exfoliate your skin but are super-gentle on delicate skin.
- Made with 3 different Exfoliants to soften even the toughest skin: Dead Sea Salts, finely ground Pumice and Whole Strawberry Seeds.
- The perfect combination of moisture and exfoliation!
- Made with Organic Olive Oil that leaves skin moisturized and nourished!
- Includes French Green Clay to provide therapeutic minerals and also creates a beautiful light green scrub!
- Scented with Pure Essential Oils of Peppermint, Rosemary & Eucalyptus
GREEN PAPAYA BRIGHTENING MASK
Although papayas can be hard to come by, if you come across one, this recipe is a great one to make. If you are looking to de-puff your face and brighten skin, go to your local health food store and pick up a papaya. Papayas are rich in anti-inflammatory enzymes that will reduce that bloated, puffy face look if applied to the skin. These enzymes also make your skin shine and glow. The added honey and yogurt will help moisturize your skin. I will note that you can substitute avocado for the yogurt, as I do that quite often (I am allergic to dairy and don’t keep it around the house). You will still get great benefits from it, maybe even better benefits.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup unripe papaya, diced
1 teaspoon plain yogurt
1 teaspoon honey
Directions:
Blend ingredients in a food processor until smooth. Apply to clean skin using fingers; leave on for 8 to 10 minutes. Rinse off using cool water and pat dry. Finish by applying a gentle moisturizer.
